UK Sportsbook & Casino Operator
Scaling Acquisition Across Two Verticals and a Volatile Auction
A UK-licensed bookmaker offering competitive odds across core sports markets, live in-play wagering, and online casino approached PPC Kingdom to build and scale paid search across both sportsbook and casino, in one of the most expensive auction environments in UK search. Rather than optimising towards clicks or registrations, we built the account around first-time depositor volume, measured against the client’s own performance reporting, with safer gambling and Google’s gambling policy requirements treated as fixed constraints on the build rather than checks applied afterwards.
The Challenge
Paid search in gambling is unforgiving. Auction prices are set by operators with deep pockets and long histories in the space, and they move sharply around major fixtures. Bidding decisions made after prices have already risen arrive too late to be useful, so the account needed to be planned against the sporting calendar rather than adjusted in reaction to it.
Sportsbook and casino also behave differently. Sportsbook demand is event-driven and spikes on a calendar you can plan against, while casino demand is steadier and competes on a different set of player values. Running both through a single account meant the structure had to separate them properly.
The harder problem was measurement. The conversion that matters commercially is confirmed in the client’s own reporting rather than in the ad platform, so optimising against platform-reported numbers alone would have meant allocating budget on the wrong figures.
The Solution
PPC Kingdom built an account structure designed to support both verticals on their own economics, with bidding anchored to real commercial outcomes:
- Vertical Separation: Sportsbook and casino were split so that budget, bidding and creative could be managed against their own economics rather than averaged together across two different player profiles.
- Full Keyword Coverage: Coverage was built out across brand, generic sportsbook and casino terms, giving the account both the volume to scale and the defensive position to hold against competitor activity.
- Measuring on Confirmed Performance: Rather than relying on what the ad platform reported, keyword performance was assessed against the client’s own conversion reporting. Budget and keyword decisions were made on confirmed outcomes rather than on the proxy numbers visible in the account.
- Calendar-Led Forecasting: Budgets, bid targets and ad copy were planned around the fixture calendar in advance, so they were in place before demand arrived rather than being adjusted after CPCs had already risen.
- Query Control & Compliance: Continuous search term review kept spend on qualified traffic and away from at-risk query patterns. Suppression lists, CAP-compliant copy and Google’s gambling certification were handled as standing requirements, so campaigns ran without interruption in a vertical where a single policy issue can take an account offline at exactly the wrong moment.
The Results
With the client’s own reporting rather than platform-reported numbers driving the decisions, and a structure that reflected how each vertical actually performs, the account became both easier to scale and easier to plan. The key outcomes included:
- Growth in first-time depositors across both sportsbook and casino, at acquisition costs held within target.
- Improved efficiency on generic terms as confirmed reporting showed where spend was and was not working.
- Impression share held through peak fixture periods, without costs running beyond plan.
- Budget planned ahead of the calendar rather than reallocated in reaction to competitor bidding.
- Uninterrupted account activity, with safer gambling controls and policy requirements maintained as part of routine optimisation.
By judging performance on confirmed outcomes rather than on platform-reported numbers, the client gained a paid search programme it can plan against, giving the business the confidence to scale investment around the sporting calendar.
